Case Study

Nifty Nordic

Introduction

Nifty Nordic is a company dedicated to helping people discover the joy of crafts while educating them about the mental health benefits of creative activities. The goal of this project was to design a mobile app that would serve as a hub for craft enthusiasts of all ages, enabling them to learn new skills, connect with a like-minded community, and stay updated on craft-related events. The app needed to reflect Nifty Nordic’s mission of inspiring creativity and fostering a sense of belonging among its users.

The Challenge

The primary challenge was to translate Nifty Nordic’s existing website and brand identity into a mobile app that not only provided craft tutorials but also fostered a sense of community. Key objectives included:

  • Creating a platform where users could easily access tutorials, save events, and purchase tickets.
  • Building a community forum to encourage interaction and sharing among users.
  • Designing an intuitive and visually appealing app that aligned with Nifty Nordic’s brand identity.
  • Ensuring the app catered to the target audience of women aged 18-35 while remaining inclusive for all age groups.

Research & Discovery

The research phase involved a combination of desk and field research to understand Nifty Nordic’s goals, target audience, and competitive landscape.

Competitor Analysis (Netnography)

We analyzed competitors to identify gaps and opportunities in the market. This helped us understand what features users valued in similar platforms.

Client and User Interviews

Interviews with Nifty Nordic’s founders provided insights into their mission and vision. We also spoke to members of the target audience to understand their needs, pain points, and expectations.

Value Proposition Canvas

Using this method, we identified the key services the app should offer, such as a community forum, event calendar, and user profiles. We also mapped out customer gains (e.g., learning new skills, connecting with others) and pains (e.g., lack of motivation, difficulty finding events) to ensure the app addressed these effectively.

UX Strategy & Mapping

Based on the research findings, we developed a UX strategy focused on:

  • Community Building — Creating a space for users to share their craft projects, ask questions, and support one another.
  • Event Engagement — Helping users discover and participate in craft events through an integrated calendar and ticketing system.
  • Personalization — Allowing users to create profiles, save tutorials, and track their progress.

We mapped out user flows and created a sitemap to ensure the app’s structure was intuitive and aligned with user needs.

Ideation & Concept Development

The ideation phase involved brainstorming content and functionality ideas. Key features we introduced included:

  • Community Forum — A space for users to interact and share their craft projects.
  • Event Calendar — A tool to help users discover and save craft events.
  • User Profiles — Personalized profiles where users could save tutorials and track their progress.

We sketched initial ideas and transformed them into low-fidelity wireframes. Using inspiration from platforms like Mobbin, we ensured the app’s design followed familiar patterns for ease of use.

Testing & Validation

We conducted two rounds of user testing to validate our designs:

  1. Low-Fidelity Usability Testing
Initial wireframes were tested to gather feedback on the app’s structure and functionality.
  2. High-Fidelity Usability Testing
A polished prototype was tested to evaluate the visual design and user experience.

Feedback from both rounds was used to refine the app, ensuring it was both functional and user-friendly.

Reflection

This project was a rewarding experience that allowed me to contribute to a meaningful cause—promoting mental well-being through creativity. By designing an app that not only teaches crafts but also builds a community, I helped Nifty Nordic take a significant step toward achieving its mission. The process reinforced the importance of research, collaboration, and iterative design in creating successful digital products.

This case study showcases my ability to tackle complex design challenges, work collaboratively with clients, and deliver solutions that align with both user needs and business goals. It’s a testament to my growth as a UX designer and my passion for creating impactful digital experiences.
